I have been
solitary,
well acquainted
with hours
of deep contentment;
I have held,
lived
what no riches
could purchase,
no luxuries
barter.

I have been
lonely,
distressed by
profound despair,
tormented by
aching experience
of abandonment,
buffered by
paralyzing, if
ultimately hollow
threats to endure
beyond scope
of imagination.

Companions:
double-edged
prescription
to counteract
what ails
and
what enriches
the peculiar shape
of this
introverted
soul.

Will their
well-intended
attentions
my candle
ignite,
or extinguish?

Will they
accompany quest
for life
authentic,
or detour
down path
to nothing more
than facade,
empty shell
of would-be
existence,
mirage over
quiet desperation
starving for meaning,
straining for life
unencumbered?

If companionship
would be
friendship,
if friendship
would be
true,
then truefriends
will be
found rarely,
among kindred
of most
uncommon
qualities.

The heart
of life
cannot be
otherwise
entrusted.

This is the result of a lot of recent reflection, on what it means to be an introvert in a very extravert-centric society, and specifically on how I often find myself torn between needs for connection with others and needs for solitude...

This stanza is perfection. The rest is very good, but that is my favorite. Then again, all introspection is a great treasure, but you put it well.

Beautiful as always, it shows so many of your feelings! I don't how are you doing it, but your poems are always so alive...I don't know how to describe it.
